Painted Trumpetfish

( Aulostomus chinensis )

The Chinese Trumpetfish – otherwise known as the Pacific Trumpetfish or Painted Flutemouth – grows up to 80cms in length. Its preferred habitat is clear, calm water around rocky outcrops and coral reefs, and it can be found in subtropical and tropical waters from the Pacific to Indian Ocean. It has a flat, elongated body with a range of colouration including bright yellow, mottled brown and green. Its defining characteristic is its tubular mouth, which can be jutted forward to catch prey. It’s a solitary animal and skilled daytime hunter, using ambush and stealth to capture the small fish and crustacea which are its favoured foods.

Trumpetfish use hide ‘n’ seek to catch dinner! They’ve been known to stick close to big fish like groupers and even hawksbill turtles to get closer to unsuspecting prey.
