Above: The white markings of a Wunderpus are as idiosyncratic as our fingerprints. No two octopus are alike!

Wunderpus Octopus

The Wunderpus is a rare species of octopus found in shallow tropical waters from Bali, north to the Philippines and east to Vanuatu.  It has particularly long arms, with a dramatic red-brown colouring patterned by white bars and spots. The white spots of Wunderpus are unique for each individual, making it easy to photo-identify individuals in the wild. Most unusual are the small eyes, positioned on elongated stalks. The Wunderpus is most active at dawn and dusk, emerging nervously from its den to hunt. Because of its colouration it’s often mistaken for the Mimic Octopus.
